God in Culture

God in Culture

Two ethereal terms joined together by a vague preposition: the title has all the trappings of confusion and personal interpretation...just what you would expect from an artistic crowd, right?

Well, here’s what it means. As a church, we believe scripture teaches God created man in His image. Everything God created declares something about His character, and everything humanity creates declares something about our own. In everything created, we can see remnants of divinity, limitations of humanity, desire for purpose greater than ourselves, and the brokenness of a sin-fraught world.

Since Christianity is about a relationship with God, which in turn, affects how we see life, then God in Culture is about how we look at culture and see God’s fingerprint. Through the written and spoken word, plays, music, and other creative medium inside and outside the church, we discuss what these creative expressions reveal about the God who created us.

Once a month, we’ll get together for one of the following:
(Check out the calendar for specific times & topics)

Examine: Listening to a lecture about art/culture/faith, etc. and discussing what that means for the church. For example, we listened to a message Donald Miller gave called “A Message to Artists” discussing why the church needs artists.

Experience: Going to a play, art exhibit, museum, etc., enjoying the creativity of the show as well as the camaraderie of the group.

Expresssion: A time for artists to bring their art, discuss the process, challenge and support each other, and create in community.
